Gabrielle Union Says Surrogacy ‘Felt Like Failure’
Gabrielle Union Gets Candid About Surrogacy: ‘It Felt Like Failure’

In between her decades-long career in Hollywood starring in both film and television classics, Gabrielle Union is also a wife to basketball legend Dwyane Wade, a stepmom of four and a mother to 6-year-old daughter, Kaavia, who she welcomed via surrogate. In her cover story with Marie Claire, Union opens up about her surrogacy journey and shared that accepting that someone else would be carrying her child was very difficult.
“Because it’s different and because every single person’s surrogacy journey is different. It’s like any time there’s any kind of variance in the experience, it’s, ‘See, I told you. You shouldn’t explore this option to expand your family,’” Union began. “But for me, it felt like failure. My body failed. It just felt like such a f—king public humiliation. Surrogacy felt like a cuckold; watching somebody do something I can’t do,” she admitted.
When asked by the outlet if she has made peace with deciding to use a surrogate, Union didn’t mince words. “No. I’ll never have peace with it, ever. And that’s not a what-anybody-has-to-say thing.’ That’s just—my yearning has never dissipated,” Union said. “I’m very grateful to our gestational caregiver, though. It’s just one of those things where it’s such a personal journey that I may never know full peace with.”
However, Union revealed that embarking on her motherhood journey later in life was the best decision for her, telling Marie Claire, “Once I became a mom and I got older, I was like, ‘Nobody can tell me s—t.’”
Next up for Union are the dual movie projects, horror film, Casket Girls and indie feature, Forbidden Fruits.
